Key Features

  • Side-by-side comparison

Paste original and modified text to see additions, deletions, and unchanged segments instantly.

  • Line or word diff

Switch between line-by-line and word-by-word modes depending on whether you are reviewing prose or code.

  • Flexible matching

Ignore whitespace or case when you care about content changes rather than formatting.

How to Use

  1. 1

    Paste both versions

Add the original text on the left and the updated text on the right.

  2. 2

    Choose diff options

Pick line or word mode and toggle ignore whitespace or ignore case as needed.

  3. 3

    Review the diff

Inspect stats, colored rows, and the unified report. Copy or download results to share.

Use Cases

  • Reviewing copy edits before publishing

Compare an original draft against an edited version to see exactly which sentences or words changed before it goes live.

  • Auditing configuration file changes

Diff two versions of a config or environment file to confirm only the intended settings were modified.

  • Confirming a find-and-replace worked correctly

Compare text before and after a bulk edit to verify the replacement only touched the intended occurrences.

  • Comparing policy or legal document revisions

Check whether a specific clause or paragraph changed between two versions of a policy or agreement.

Examples

Release notes tweak

Compare two changelog lines with a version bump.

Original: Version 1.0 · Modified: Version 2.0
1 line removed, 1 line added, other lines unchanged

Word-level edit

Spot a single verb change in a sentence.

Word mode · jumps → leaps
1 word removed, 1 word added

Ignore case

Treat ERROR and error as the same token.

Ignore case enabled · ERROR vs error
No differences found

Benefits

  • Review copy edits before publishing
  • Compare config snippets or log excerpts quickly
  • Share a readable diff report with teammates
  • Keep sensitive drafts on your device
  • No account or upload required

Best Practices

  • Use line mode for multi-line documents, code, and lists.
  • Use word mode for short sentences or single-line edits.
  • Enable ignore whitespace when formatting changed but content did not.
  • Load the example first to see how additions and deletions are colored.

Common Mistakes

  • Comparing line mode output when the real change is inside one long wrapped line.
  • Forgetting that trailing newlines create an extra empty line in line mode.
  • Expecting character-level diff - this tool compares lines or words only.
  • Pasting inputs larger than 200,000 characters per field.

Privacy Notice

All diffing happens in your browser after the page loads. ToolMint does not upload, store, or transmit the text you paste into the tool.

About This Tool

What is this tool?

A Text Diff Checker compares two versions of text and highlights what was added, removed, or left unchanged. ToolMint’s Text Diff Checker runs locally in your browser using an LCS-based algorithm, so you can review edits to copy, configuration files, or notes without uploading content.

Why use it?

Manual comparison is slow and error-prone when two texts are similar. A diff tool surfaces the exact lines or words that changed, along with summary stats and a unified report you can copy or download. Because processing stays on your device, you can safely compare internal drafts and customer-facing content.

Limitations

This tool compares lines or whitespace-separated words, not individual characters. Very large inputs are capped at 200,000 characters per field to protect browser performance. Complex three-way merges and version control features are out of scope.
